Drupal migration
Moving off Drupal

Drupal
migration

A migration that does not become its own multi-year project.

A Drupal migration for pharmaceutical companies moving off the platform: usually because a major version upgrade would effectively mean rebuilding, and that rebuild budget is better spent moving to a platform with lower ongoing specialist dependency.

What a Drupal migration
actually involves

What it involves

Drupal major version upgrades have historically required substantial rework rather than incremental updates, which means companies on an older Drupal version are often facing a full rebuild regardless — the question becomes what to rebuild onto, not whether to rebuild.

What we deliver

A review of the current content types and taxonomy structure, a recommendation for what to migrate onto, the move itself with full URL mapping, and a post-launch check that indexed content and rankings carried across intact.

Out of scope

Drupal administration and module development are not something we take on. Our part is getting the content — and the taxonomy relationships that organise it — off Drupal cleanly, so nothing that depended on a content type or term reference silently breaks.

Content types and taxonomy terms mapped, not flattened

Drupal sites often carry a genuinely structured taxonomy — therapy areas, audiences, content types cross-referenced in ways a simple export loses. We map that structure onto the target platform’s own fields rather than flattening everything into plain body text.

Why pharmaceutical companies
move off Drupal

The trigger differs by company. A Drupal migration starts from what actually forced the decision.

Migration process
Four stages

How we run a
Drupal migration

Four stages. A Drupal migration is scoped to avoid becoming its own open-ended project.

AUDIT
01
01

What the current Drupal implementation actually holds

We audit content, custom modules and functionality, since Drupal implementations often carry significant custom development that needs deliberate handling.

What we review

An inventory of content and the custom modules built specifically for the current Drupal site, since Drupal implementations tend to carry more bespoke development than other platforms. For each module we decide whether the functionality needs replicating, has a simpler equivalent, or is no longer actually needed.

Result

A clear, bounded scope of what actually needs to move across, rather than an open-ended commitment to reproduce every piece of custom Drupal functionality regardless of whether it earns its complexity.

TARGET PLATFORM
02
02

Matched to your actual requirement

We recommend a target platform based on real content complexity and team capability, typically a properly structured WordPress build.

What we evaluate

How much of the current complexity comes from genuine content or functional requirements versus custom Drupal engineering that a simpler platform can achieve differently, and your team's technical capacity for the platform going forward, not the one currently in place.

Result

A target platform with meaningfully lower ongoing specialist dependency, so routine changes do not require a Drupal developer every time, which is usually the real cost driving the migration decision.

MIGRATION
03
03

Full URL mapping to protect visibility

We migrate content with complete URL mapping, protecting the search visibility the Drupal site has built up.

What we handle

Migration of content out of Drupal's node structure, complete URL mapping so every path the current site answers to still resolves, and preservation of the structured data already contributing to how the site appears in search results.

Result

A new platform that carries forward the search visibility the Drupal site built up, instead of losing it to broken links and unmapped paths in the transition.

VERIFICATION
04
04

Confirming nothing was lost

We verify content completeness and monitor indexation closely after launch.

What we check

Content checked against the original Drupal inventory for anything missed in the move, redirects tested one by one, and indexation monitored after launch to catch pages search engines are struggling to pick up on the new platform.

Result

Confirmed evidence that moving off Drupal did not cost you search visibility or leave content behind, checked and documented rather than assumed from a smooth-looking launch.

Drupal migration FAQ

Drupal migration questions

What comes up when moving off Drupal.

Would upgrading Drupal be cheaper than migrating?

Not always – a major Drupal version upgrade can involve as much module and template rework as a full migration, especially once custom modules and a deep taxonomy structure are involved. We assess your current version, module inventory, and content-type complexity first, then compare that rework cost against migrating to a platform with lower ongoing specialist dependency.

How are rankings protected when migrating from Drupal?

Rankings are protected through a full URL and content mapping exercise before launch. Every Drupal node, taxonomy term, and content-type archive gets matched against its new equivalent, since Drupal’s path structure and taxonomy-driven URLs rarely align directly with the new platform’s routing. We build 301 redirects for every mapped URL, keep XML sitemaps in sync, and monitor Search Console for crawl errors after the switch.

What platform do you recommend instead?

Pharmaceutical WordPress is our default recommendation, though we size that answer to your actual content model rather than applying it automatically. The taxonomy and content-type audit we run at the start of a migration tells us whether your current structure – node types, fields, and multilingual setup – maps cleanly onto pharmaceutical WordPress and ACF, or whether a different platform fits your case better.

Can our custom Drupal functionality be replicated?

Most custom Drupal functionality can be replicated, though we reassess each module rather than rebuilding it exactly as-is. Many custom modules were originally built to work around a specific Drupal limitation, and the replacement platform may not share that constraint, so a simpler native feature or plugin can often do the job. We flag those cases during the technical audit before development starts.
